Pete Mazzone has been an active member of the Florida Tech athletic program for the past 37 years. Over his tenure at Florida Tech, Mazzone has held numerous positions, including Assistant Athletic Director, Intramural Director, Strength Coach, Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, Associate Athletic Director and Interim Athletic Director.
Mazzone always had a passion for working in athletics and a deep desire to coach. A two-time recipient of the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year award, Mazzone’s motivation for coaching came form his desire to teach. He appreciated the opportunity to mentor and support young people during their developmental years.
He became the Assistant Athletic Director at Florida Tech soon after moving to Florida in 1985, and then the Head Coach for the Men’s & Women’s Cross Country teams seven years later in 1992. From 2011 to 2015, Mazzone also served as the first Head Coach of the Men’s and Women’s Track & Field teams, two programs he helped establish at Florida Tech.
In 1998, the men's team finished second and women's team finished fourth in the SSC. For this he was named the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in three years.
The motivation for coaching came from his desire to teach. Mazzone went to school for exercise science because he wanted the opportunity to mentor and support young people.
Mazzone was born and raised in Warwick, Rhode Island. He received his bachelor's degree in physical education at Frostburg State (Maryland) in 1978. He received his master's degree in exercise science at the University of Central Florida in 1989.
He lives with his wife Barbara in West Melbourne, Florida and is the father on Florida Tech alum Cristina Mazzone(Chavarriaga).
