
Currently in his seventh season at Florida Tech as the head coach for the men and women, Bill Macom has built the Panther tennis program into national contenders. Macom’s women’s teams have qualified for the NCAA tournament for three consecutive years, while finishing the past two seasons ranked 20th nationally. The men have been ranked consistently in the top 50 nationally for the past three years and made an NCAA tournament appearance in 2009. In 2010-11, the women’s season featured the No. 9 ranked doubles team in the nation, Katarina and Kristina Huba, who were named ITA All-Americans and First Team All-Sunshine State Conference in doubles. Katarina was also ranked 25th nationally and named First Team All-SSC, both in singles. They join Natalia Ramos as the only Florida Tech women’s tennis players to achieve All-America status. Academically, the Panthers were named an ITA All-Academic Team with over a 3.5 team GPA. Nine players were recognized as ITA Scholar Athletes. Barry Dylewski led the men to a top 50 ranking in 2011 with a team-high 13 singles victories. After a slow start to the season due to injuries, the men gained momentum during spring break with a six-match win streak. They finished the year with over a 3.0 team GPA. DJ Pate, Richard Pentecostes and Michael Schmidt were recognized as ITA Scholar Athletes. Over the last few years, Macom has received four prestigious awards. He was named USPTA/Florida College Coach of the Year in 2010 and the USPTA/Florida-Melbourne District Tennis Professional of the Year in 2009. He was selected USPTA National College Coach of the Year and won the USTA/ITA Campus Recreation and Community Outreach Award in 2008. Macom came to Florida Tech from Division I Jacksonville University, where he coached from 1994-2000 and held the title of director of men’s and women’s tennis. While at Jacksonville, he became the women’s tennis career victory leader and ranked second on the men’s victory list. His men’s and women’s programs attained national team rankings and numerous student-athletes achieved individual academic and athletic honors during his tenure. He also held the position of adjunct professor and the coordinator of alumni and parent relations. Macom spent several seasons as a tennis professional in the Tampa area before his arrival at Florida Tech. He became a community leader as he volunteered his time on the Rules and Regulations Committee for the USTA Florida League Tennis Council, sitting as the Hillsborough County District Representative for USTA Florida. He was also the local junior team tennis league coordinator for District 11. He was the director of tennis at Hunter’s Green Country Club, a teaching pro at the Harbour Island Athletic Club, the junior tennis coordinator for Northdale Golf and Tennis and head professional for The Tennis Connection. He has held tennis professional positions at Center Court Tennis Club in Chatham, N.J. and Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port Saint Lucie, Fla. His playing experiences include a 2003 Florida ranking of eight in the men’s 35 and over division, a 2002 Florida ranking of two in the men’s 30 and over division, a 2002 USPTA Florida top five ranking in the men’s open division and a 1999 National ranking of eight in the men’s 25 and over division. He played collegiately at Jacksonville. He was also a USTA Zonal coach for Team Florida’s 14 and under team in 2007. Born and raised in Bay Head and Bridgewater, N.J., Macom comes from a large family of tennis players. Both of his parents were tennis enthusiasts and three of his siblings played Division IA collegiate tennis. His father, Morgan, was a nationally ranked player in several age divisions. His brother, John, has produced musical scores for events all over the world.
