Three-Run First Inning Lifts Saint Leo to Victory, 5-2
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Softball) – Florida Tech (22-14, 9-4 SSC) lost for just the second time in 15 home games Thursday afternoon as Saint Leo (27-13, 7-3 SSC) won game one of the Sunshine State Conference series 5-2 at Nancy Bottge Field.
The Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Those runs were all pitcher Alana Tabel needed. In a complete-game seven innings, this week’s Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week presented by VALIC surrendered just four hits, two runs and two walks, while striking out two.
She stayed out of trouble the entire game, allowing one run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Elaine Brown to cut Saint Leo’s lead to 3-1. After the Lions scored one run in the fifth- and sixth-innings, Lindsy Dugan roped a single to right field in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-2 game.
Tabel (11-5) did not permit any more runs as she sat the Panthers down in order in the seventh for her 11th win of the season.
"They played better than us,” head coach Val Silvestrini said. “We had a bad first inning, had a hard time finding a way to score runs and making adjustments on the pitcher. We have two more [games] tomorrow. We’ll make the adjustments and get ready to play.”
Amanda Smith (15-7) received the loss. Saint Leo totaled nine hits against her and drew four walks, while striking out once.
Both teams will return to Nancy Bottge Field on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Live audio and stats will be available for both games at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
