MELBOURNE, Fla. (Softball) – Florida Tech lost both games of its Friday doubleheader to Saint Leo, 4-2 and 11-4, at Nancy Bottge Field. The Panthers drop to 22-16 overall and 9-6 in Sunshine State Conference play, while the Lions improve to 29-13, 9-3 SSC.

Saint Leo continued its trend of scoring first in both of Friday’s games. It took a 2-0 lead in the beginning of game one and extended it to 4-0 in the sixth inning. FIT countered with two runs in the bottom half, but Alana Tabel relieved starter Megan Still in the circle and did not allow any runs in her 1 2/3 innings of work.

Elaine Brown led the Panthers with two hits. Taylor Peterson and Ashley Montion recorded the team’s RBIs. Amanda Smith (15-8) received the loss, giving up four runs, three were earned, on seven hits and two walks in five innings.

The Lions scored one run in the first inning in game two. Peterson erased the deficit by bringing in Brown on a sacrifice fly in the lower half of the inning. However, Saint Leo went on to score two runs in the second and three in the third to go up 6-1 heading into the sixth inning.

Saint Leo would pad its advantage with three runs in the top of the sixth before the Panthers answered with three of their own in the bottom half. Kara Dickinson, Peterson, Lindsy Dugan and Kelsey Donahue strung together four straight hits. Ashley Montion capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to push Dugan across the plate.

Still, who started game one for Saint Leo, was inserted into the game with one out in the sixth inning and did not permit any additional runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Smith (15-9) was tagged with the loss. Dugan and Brooke Smith had two hits each to pace FIT. Peterson had two RBIs.

The Panthers will travel to Northwood on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The next time they’ll play at Nancy Bottge Field is when they conclude the regular season April 20-21 against Barry.
