Defending Champions Host Panthers in Spring Opener
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Men’s Tennis) – Florida Tech’s men’s tennis program begins its season on the road looking to hand No. 1 and defending NCAA Division II Champion Barry University its first loss in two seasons on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Bucs, who went a perfect 29-0 last season under ITA National Coach of the Year George Samuel, return most of their championship team and will lean heavily on the senior trio of Ollie Lemaitre (12-1 in singles last season, 19-7 in doubles), Leo Vivas (16-1 in singles, 23-2 in doubles) and Romain Costamagna (14-1 in singles, 19-7 in doubles).
The Panthers begin the spring season ranked No. 43 nationally and No. 10 in the South Region.
“There is no better test than starting your season against the best,” said head coach Bill Macom. “To get an opportunity to break Barry’s 29 game winning streak at their place is something that our guys are excited about. If we battle for every point in every game, good things will happen.”
Beau Fieldsend, Matic Leskovar, Diego Ramirez, Jose Martinez and Riley Lorenz picked up three singles wins apiece in the fall while Fieldsend and Leskovar teamed to go 3-1 in doubles action.
Patrick Hernandez finished No. 8 in the South Region in doubles play last season with a 14-5 record, also earning All-Sunshine State Conference First Team honors. Lorenz and Martinez went 2-2 in doubles play in the fall and Zach Eicholz and Bruno Rodrigues went a perfect 2-0 as a duo.
