WINTER PARK, Fla. (Softball) – Florida Tech freshman Rachel Pence was chosen Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week presented by VALIC on Monday. The honor is among the first awards handed out by the conference for the spring 2014 season.

Pence, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., fired a perfect game in the Panthers’ 10-0 season-opening win over Fort Valley State on Saturday. She struck out 10 batters on only 50 pitches in five innings. She fell behind in the count only once, never had a three-ball count and never allowed the ball to leave the infield for her first collegiate victory.

On Sunday, the psychology major pitched four strong innings of relief in FIT’s 8-1 win against Webber International. She surrendered her first and only hit, an infield blooper, to the third batter she faced. She did not allow any additional base runners en route to her first save. She finished the outing with six strikeouts.

The SSC also announced Rollins senior Kristie Hoeffer was selected the league’s Player of the Week. She hit three home runs last weekend, including a walk-off two-run home run against Lander. She batted .455 with five RBIs and five runs, and notched a 1.273 slugging percentage.

Pence and the Panthers will open the three-day, five-game Eckerd College Spring College Invitational on Friday against Armstrong Atlantic. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. Live stats will be available for all five of FIT’s games at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
