Women’s Basketball Returns Home to Face Saint Leo Wednesday
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Basketball) – Last week was not kind to the Florida Tech Panthers. They suffered consecutive defeats for the first time this season at the hands of Barry and Lynn. The Panthers get their chance to make this week different when they host Saint Leo Wednesday night in Sunshine State Conference play.
While both games were close, the Panthers (13-8, 4-5 SSC) fell to Barry 60-56, and then to Lynn 57-53. The pair of four point defeats built a log jam in the middle of the SSC standings with the Panthers, Lynn, and Barry now all tied at 4-5. Sophomore Tiesha Flagler put together a solid week for the Panthers. Flagler pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds against Barry, and followed up with her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds against the Fighting Knights.
Junior Kayk Wilson scored all 17 of her points against Lynn in the second half, and is second in the SSC in scoring at 18.4 points per game.
The Lions (14-5, 5-4 SSC) are coming off consecutive defeats of their own. Saint Leo fell to No. 4 Nova Southeastern 85-76, and then last Saturday to No. 15 Rollins 86-76. The defeat to Nova stopped what was a four game winning streak for the Lions.
Teresa Manigrasso leads Saint Leo in Scoring at 15.9 points per game. Chelsea Williams is right behind Manigrasso at 14.4 points per game.
The Panthers are looking to pull off the season sweep of the Lions. The squad defeated the Lions in Saint Leo 59-40 back on Jan. 4. Wilson led the Panthers in that contest with a game-high 23 points, and senior Rita Acevedo scored nine points to go with 12 rebounds, and six assists. The Panthers lead the all-time series against the Lions 46-10.
