Game 21: Panthers Look to Roar Past Lions on Greek Night
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Basketball) – Following its 72-63 victory at Lynn University (7-12, 1-8 SSC), Florida Tech (14-6, 4-5 SSC) looks to improve to .500 in Sunshine State Conference play and split its regular season series with Saint Leo University (16-6, 4-5 SSC) on Wednesday, Feb. 5 when the Panthers host the Lions at 7:30 p.m. at the Clemente Center.
Wednesday is Greek Night at Clemente and members of Alpha Tau Omega, Chi Phi, Delta Tau Delta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Lambda Phi, Sigma Tau Gamma, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta and Phi Sigma Sigma are encouraged to support the Panthers all evening as the women’s team (13-8, 4-5 SSC) hosts Saint Leo (14-5, 5-4 SSC) at 5:30 p.m. A dance-off between all fraternities and sororities will take place during halftime of the men’s game. Admission is free to students with a valid FIT ID and general admission is $7.
Don’t miss your opportunity to catch Panthers basketball at the Clemente Center. After Wednesday’s contests, the women’s team has two home games remaining (Feb. 15 and March 1) and the men have three (Feb. 15, Feb. 19 and March 1).
Corbin Jackson is averaging 15.8 points/game and 10.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.9 blocks/game in conference play and was named this week’s SSC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by VALIC. Jackson dominated in Saturday’s win over Lynn, recording his 14th double-double of the season with 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. On the year, the redshirt sophomore is averaging 15.8 points/game, 11.3 rebounds/game, 3.5 blocks and 2.8 assists.
Jermaine Jackson leads the conference in scoring with 22.6 points per game in SSC action and six 20-point performances against conference opponents. Overall, the junior guard leads FIT in scoring at 21.0 points/game and has reached double figures in all 20 games in 2013-14.
Chris Carter is among the nation’s leaders in total assists and assists/game and his 8.1 assists/game is tops in the SSC. Carter is distributing at will in conference play, averaging 7.9 assists and has currently dished out 10 or more assists in back-to-back games). The Port St. Lucie, Fla. native has registered seven double-doubles this season and scores 18.6 points per game and averages 2.3 steals/game.

Robert Booth provided a much-needed spark off of the Panther bench, scoring 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting as FIT swept the regular season series against Lynn after downing the Fighting Knights, 72-63, to begin the month of Feb. The Panthers were the hottest team down the stretch last season, going a perfect 9-0 in Feb. and defeating every SSC program that stood in their way.
FIT heads to the University of Tampa (12-6, 5-4 SSC) on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. Florida Tech defeated the Spartans, 71-66, on Jan. 11, 2014. The Panthers return to the Clemente Center on Saturday, Feb. 15 to take on nationally-ranked Florida Southern College (19-1, 8-1 SSC) at 4 p.m. The afternoon contest is FIT’s annual ‘Black Out’ game.
Notes: Florida Tech is 12-2 at the Clemente Center this season (one loss came at Eastern Florida State College’s Titan Coliseum)… the Panthers are 13-4 when leading at halftime and 14-4 when holding opponents to a sub-.500 field goal percentage… following a win, FIT is 9-4 this season but 0-3 in SSC play… Florida Tech is 10-4 when wearing their gray uniforms… the Panthers have earned six of the 12 SSC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week awards, the most of any school… Corbin Jackson has been named the conference’s weekly award recipient three times and Jermaine Jackson and Carter have each earned the nod twice… FIT’s projected starting lineup of Carter, Jermaine Jackson, Akeem Johnson, Corbin Jackson and David Usic are 11-6, 4-5 SSC this season.
