Fresh off his second Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year honor, Adam Thorstad returns for his fourth season as head coach of the Florida Tech women’s rowing team.

Thorstad, a Florida Tech graduate, helped the varsity eight notch three first-place and three third-place finishes en route to SSC Boat of the Year honors in 2009.  Following the team’s impressive season, the conference named Thorstad Coach of the Year for the second time.

In just his first year, Thorstad was awarded Coach of the Year after his varsity eight team posted numerous top six finishes.  The squad placed second at the SSC Championships and third two times, at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association State Championships and the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regional Championships.  Up against some of the best competition in the nation, the Panthers fared well, finishing sixth at the Dad Vail Regatta and the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Since Thorstad took over the women’s rowing program, he has had one student-athlete named to the Pocock All-American Team and two earn Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete honors.  Five have earned a spot on the conference’s All-SSC Rowing Team and five have been tabbed for the all-freshman/novice team.

Prior to stepping into his current role, Thorstad gained head coaching experience, while teaching precalculus and geometry at Belen Jesuit Prep in Miami, Fla.  Outside of the classroom, he was involved with coaching and training the varsity, junior varsity and novice student-athletes as well as recruitment and retention.  During his one year at the institution, he helped lead the boys team to a fourth-place finish at the Florida Scholastic States Regatta.

While he was working toward his master’s degree at Marietta College from 2003-05, Thorstad served as a graduate assistant.  His duties included recruiting and coaching freshman along with overseeing the student work study program.  At Dad Vails, his freshman eight team bested its competition in 2004 and in 2005, the unit took third.

Upon graduating from Florida Tech, Thorstad was the Panthers’ assistant coach for two years.  Under his guidance, the 2002 freshman eight squad took fifth at Dad Vails and his 2003 freshman four team earned third place.

As a Panther, Thorstad served as his team’s captain for the 2000-01 season.  He helped the men’s pair collect a fourth-place finish at Dad Vails in 2000.  One year later, his varsity four team took third place.

Thorstad earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Tech in 2001.  He later went on to earn his master’s degree in education from Marietta in 2005.  Thorstad holds Level III Coaching Certification from the USRowing Association.

He resides in Melbourne with his wife, Patricia.
